Diversity Book Fair

Evanston, IL, January 20, 2017– Nationally recognized authors showcase diversity-embracing books at local book fair, sponsored by InterfaithFamily/Chicago, Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation and PJ Library. There is a Jewish value which is taught across religious traditions to love our neighbors as ourselves because we are our neighbor. To help parents raise children who embrace diversity and understand others with different backgrounds and family make-ups, JRC, the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation, will be holding a Book Fair focused on increasing the diversity in the books we read with our children Sunday February 26, 2017, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., featuring Jessica Herthel, author of I am Jazz and Ami Polonsky, author of Gracefully Grayson. Authors will begin reading their featured selections at 11:00 a.m. Co-sponsors include InterfaithFamily/Chicago and PJ Library.

Shabbat Family Dinner & Service

Our Purim carnival includes dressing up in costume, sharing special foods like hamentaschen (pocket cookies), reading the scroll (megillah) complete with boos and cheers, and celebrating with a special carnival. There are a variety of games and booths at our Purim carnival where kids can win and take home prizes!

Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin

A benefit for the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago’s Holocaust Community Services program. The Chicago premiere of this powerful multi-media production brings to life the story of Maestro Raphael Schächter and his choir of 150 fellow inmates of Terezin, who learned and performed Verdi’s Requiem Mass. Created and conducted by Maestro Murry Sidlin, it features a complete performance of Verdi’s Requiem, combined with on-stage drama, video interviews and film from the era. This performance features the Chicago Philharmonic, the Chicago Vocal Artists Ensemble, Jeremy Piven and Tovah Feldshuh. The event is chaired by Virginia & Norman Bobins and Karyn & Bill Silverstein. All production costs have been underwritten by the Crown Family and Pritzker Family Philanthropic Fund. All other gifts and proceeds will directly support Holocaust Community Services. Special Passover Shabbat with Storyteller Marilyn Price

Shir Hadash Synagogue will usher in the Passover season with a special worship service of the arts featuring puppeteer and storyteller Marilyn Price on Friday evening April 7th at 200 W. Dundee Road in Wheeling. There will be two services that evening, a Young Family dinner and service beginning at 5:30 PM and a community service beginning at 7:30 PM. Marilyn Price will tell stories at both services. Marilyn captivates audiences of all ages by combining entertainment with some of life's most treasured values. A nationally-acclaimed storyteller, educator and puppeteer, she inspires her audiences to open their minds and their hearts.
