The Community Foundation for Jewish Education (4907 Golf Rd., Skokie)
The Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago is the largest umbrella agency for Jewish education in Chicago serving more than 20,000 students of all ages annually with cutting-edge, high quality Jewish education programs. We have enjoyed a wonderful partnership with the Lewis Summer Intern Program, and each year have provided an exemplary, high-level experience for our interns.
CFJE programming takes place both inside and outside the traditional classroom. Programs for teens and young adults include: Ta’am Yisrael Eighth Grade Israel Experience, which has escorted nearly 1,000 eighth graders to Israel on an excellent peer experience, Panim el Panim, which takes high school students to Washington, D.C. to learn about the intersection between public policy and Jewish values, and Rosh Hodesh: It’s a Girl Thing! which brings girls grades 6th-8th together to build strong Jewish identity. The agency also works with JUF’s Young Leadership Division to combine creative programming with Jewish learning for young adults.
CFJE also provides many excellent programs for adults. The Dawn Schuman Institute offers adult Jewish education classes that include bible, text study, kosher cooking, Israel related topics, Israeli films and much more. High quality classes are offered throughout Chicago and the suburbs at a variety of synagogues and other venues. The community’s largest Hebrew Ulpan Mercaz Ivrit in four locations is available for those who either want to begin to understand the Hebrew language or to further advance their proficiency. The Florence Melton Mini-School is a two-year Jewish learning program for adults with courses focusing on Jewish ethics, history, ideas and philosophy.
The agency published a National Jewish Book Award-winning volume entitled, “Homeland: The Illustrated History of the State of Israel.” The 120+ page graphic novel masterfully combines graphic art with the art of storytelling for young and older readers alike. The academically sound work continues to transform the landscape of the telling of the history of the Jewish people and its homeland. This coming summer, Homeland will be turned into an iphone application.
A Lewis intern will work directly with CFJE staff on a variety of programs and may include some of the initiatives described above. Each project will help the intern to learn more about Jewish education and how to envision, design, and implement a successful program. Once again, the agency is committed to the intern experiencing a meaningful and exciting summer experience.
