Services for the Economically Disadvantaged and Others in Crisis

Lewis Summer Intern Program Placements : Services for the Economically Disadvantaged and Others in CrisisEZRA Multi-Service Center / Russian Senior Center  (Uptown)

The MSC is a community-based service center that provides emergency services to the Edgewater, Uptown and Lakeview communities.  The Russian Senior Center programs include cultural, educational, civic and social opportunities.  Advocacy and translation services emphasize assistance with benefits programs, utility companies, forms assistance and group services. The intern may provide supportive services such as forms assistance and translation to the target population. Group services build vital relationships and connections to the community.

Under the supervision and direction of the RSC Coordinator, the intern may provide the following:

  • Translation and interpretation services
  • Assistance with forms and applications
  • Provide information and referral
  • Advocacy with benefits, housing, utility and other providers
  • Assist with group programs 
  • Teach English as Second Language Class
  • Maintain client files and data base entries
  • Participate in Kabbalat Shabbat program on Fridays
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 

  • Excellent Russian written language skills
  • Excellent Russian verbal language skills
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Must enjoy working with older adults
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft
  • Strong desire to work for an agency with an urban Jewish social agenda

 

Jewish Vocational Servic (JVS) (300 Revere Drive, Northbrook)

Jewish Vocational Service is a dynamic, flexible organization, providing the latest techniques to meet the continually changing employment and career planning challenges of the rapidly changing marketplace. The agency offers a wide range of professional career development and rehabilitation training programs for clients at all levels.

JVS / Employment Specialist Assistant 

Meet with clients under the supervision of JVS staff to understand his/her employment desires, skills and needs.  Meet with potential employers to understand their needs and match JVS/client needs to available positions.

Tasks may include:  Explain the Supported Employment Program to potential employers and the benefits to using JVS services.  Visit clients on the job to help assist with job retention.  Help clients learn job tasks and provide strategies for success .  Provide instruction in job readiness skills.  Supervised by manager of SEP.

Open to majors in the helping professions: social work, psychology, teaching, special education .   Customer relations skills helpful.  Availability of a car for travel to different sites.

JVS / Sampson Katz Center   (2020 West Devon, Chicago)

The Jewish Vocational Service, Sampson-Katz Center summer intern will assist in our Behavioral Health Center working alongside the regular counseling staff with people with severe mental illness.. The intern will assist staff with the running of Psychosocial Rehabilitation groups, Community Support and Residential activities.  Interns will help to develop new curricula for groups and experience documentation procedures for Medicaid reimbursable services.

Open to majors in the helping professions.
